WFA workflows sporadically fail with "Cannot run program "powershell" Access is denied" error

OnCommand Workflow Automation (WFA) 4.x and 5. x

Issue

  • Several WFA workflows that have completed successfully in the past will sporadically fail with the following error message:
Cannot run program "powershell" (in directory "C:\Program Files\NetApp\WFA\jboss\standalone\tmp\wfa"): CreateProcess error=5, Access is denied
 
  • This error can be seen within the WFA web interface on the Execution tab by clicking Execution Status and the Job # associated with the workflow that failed
    • More detailed logs on this error can be found in the WFA web interface by clicking Administration > Log Viewer > wfa.log
  • Rebooting the Operating System temporarily fixes the issue
