Why does a Data ONTAP Edge system fail to start and return the error: VM will not be powered on due to enabled CPU power management features on the host system?

To operate correctly, Data ONTAP-v based storage systems (like the Data ONTAP Edge product) must manage the virtual machine power settings, instead of the server managing the power settings. Therefore, it is necessary to disable the power management BIOS settings for the server on which the Data ONTAP-v system is installed. If the BIOS settings are not set correctly, the system will not start.

The following is the complete error message that will be reported when attempting to start the system:
Error: [102] VmPowerErr: VM 'edge-vm-1' will not be powered on due to enabled CPU power management features on the host system. Please disable CPU power management features in the host system BIOS before starting this VM.

The Data ONTAP Edge models that are affected include CBvM100, FDvM100, and FDvM200.

Disabling power management BIOS settings:
For NetApp-approved servers that have been tested by NetApp, it is possible to adjust the BIOS settings listed in the table below. For NetApp-approved servers that have not been tested, it might be necessary to review the documentation that came with the server to identify the specific BIOS settings that must be changed in order to disable server power management. The names of the actual BIOS settings are not standard across servers; however, in many cases, they will be similar to the items listed in the following table.

Verifying that BIOS settings are set correctly:
Once the BIOS settings have been changed, verify that they are set correctly using the VMware vSphere Client.

Launch the VMware vSphere Client.
Select the ESX server. Under the Configuration tab, select Power Management in the Hardware window.
Ensure that the Active Policy is listed as 'Not supported'.

If this value is incorrect, reset the BIOS settings, restart the server, and check the settings again.
