Why do Large 3-way, NDMP restores fail with Quantum Libraries, the Filer and a backup client like Veritas, or Reliaty?
Applies to
- Data ONTAP 7 and earlier
- NDMP
Answer
In a 3-way backup configuration with Quantum Libraries involved, large file restores can fail.
The backup vendor sends an ndmpd abort to the Filer. Smaller sized restores do not exhibit this problem.
In a 3-way backup configuration with Quantum Libraries involved, large file restores can fail. During the phase of the restore where the filer builds the directory and file structure, there is not much communication between the filer and the tape drives, so the TCP window size shrinks to zero. The quantum ndmp code does not handle this situation very well, resets the connection and notifies the backup application that the restore has failed. The backup vendor then sends an ndmpd abort to the filer. Smaller sized restores do not exhibit this problem.
Quantum has fixed this bug in Firmware, Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP), v2.19. This is not a general release, but you may request the fix from Quantum. The Part Number is 6311408-10.
