Description

This article details the procedure to be followed in transitioning name servers if specified together within Data ONTAP 7-Mode and SVM are more than three.
Number of name servers specified together within the Data ONTAP 7-Mode system and target SVM are more than three; however, the clustered Data ONTAP supports only three name servers; hence, the 7-Mode transition tool will transition only up to three, including the already configured in the SVM.

Data ONTAP 7-Mode behavior:

In Data ONTAP 7-Mode, you can have more than three entries for nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf; however, only the first three will be used for name resolution.

Clustered Data ONTAP behavior(8.2.1+):

Clustered Data ONTAP systems accept only the three entries for the nameserver, unlike in the Data ONTAP 7-Mode. The end result is the same. Validate only the first three nameserver entries in the case of 7-Mode systems.
