How to restore files or directories from a Cloud Volumes ONTAP SnapMirror or SnapVault destination using CIFS

Description

This describes how to recover a single file or multiple files or directories (anything other than a full volume restore) from a SnapMirror or SnapVault destination hosted by a Cloud Volumes ONTAP instance using CIFS and standard GUI tools.

Procedure

1.) Mount the SnapMirror or SnapVault destination volume within the NetApp cluster via Data ONTAP.  It’s important to note that this is different from a client mounting the volume.  This is a construct within Data ONTAP where the volume is given a path within the file structure of the SVM.  This can be done via System Manager.  To get to System Manager and mount the volume within ONTAP:

  • Enter the working environment for the Cloud Volumes ONTAP (CVO) instance(s) that house the SnapMirror or SnapVault destination volume
  • Click on the 3 lines at the top right-hand corner of the page to enter the menu for that working environment
  • Click “Advanced” and additional items will unfold
  • Click on “System Manager” and follow the prompts
  • In System Manager choose:
    • Storage -> Junction Paths -> Unfold the root junction path (denoted with a forward slash)
  • Click on “Mount” and a dialogue box will open giving you the option to choose what volume to mount
  • Choose your SnapMirror or SnapVault destination volume.  The rest will auto-populate and you can then choose “Mount”

2.) Ensure that CIFS is enabled for the SVM.  This can be done from:

Storage -> SVMs -> Choose the SVM that owns the destination volume -> SVM Settings -> CIFS

  • If not already enabled and running, choose “Setup” and the tool will walk you through what’s needed to setup CIFS (standard CIFS setup items)

3.) Create a CIFS share using the SnapMirror or SnapVault destination (this will be mountable but will be read-only).  This can be done by:

  • Go to Storage -> Shares -> Create Share
  • In the dialogue box that opens, “Browse” for the destination volume and the wizard will auto-populate the rest
  • Choose “Create”
  • Select the share that you just created and choose “Edit”
  • In the dialogue box that opens up go to the “Options” tab and make sure “Show previous versions” is enabled.  If not, check that box and select “Save and close”

OPTIONAL

If you’re looking for a previous version of something that still exists in the active filesystem, you can see ‘Previous Versions’ once you mount the destination volume.  If you’re looking for something that’s been deleted from the active filesystem, then you’ll need to enable “Show Snapshots” by:

  • Go to Storage -> Shares -> Choose the share for the destination volume
  • Choose “Edit” and in the dialogue box that opens, go to the “Options” tab and check the box next to “Show Snapshots”
  • Choose “Save and Close”

4.) Mount the SnapMirror or SnapVault destination Share that you just created using Windows Explorer and “Map network drive”

 

NOTE: This will require that you’ve properly setup networking and permissions.  These are outside of the scope of this article.  Keep in mind this WILL be different from where the source volume is located by design.  Cloud Manager is probably the simplest place to see the data access information.  You can see the configured data access network by:

  • Choose the CVO instance where the destination volume lives
  • Choose “Enter Working Environment”
  • Click on the 3 lines at the top right-hand corner of the page to enter the menu for that working environment
  • Choose "Information"
  • Look for “Data” and make sure you use the IP address that is required depending on where you’re accessing it from (within the cloud environment or outside of it)

 

Once you’ve mounted the destination volume, you can now search the contents of the volumes.  Remember, the volume is read-only at this point but you can copy items out of it to other locations for restore.  Depending on what you need, here is where you may look for previous versions or where you may need to view the hidden SnapShot directory.

To view the SnapShot directory; as long as you’ve enabled this feature on the share, you’ll simply navigate to the “~snapshot” directory that will now show up in Windows Explorer.  Inside this directory will be browsable Snapshot directories that are timestamped to make locating specific data easy.

5.) Copy the files to wherever you’d like them to go for restore purposes.
