Applies to

  • NetApp Copy & Sync
  • Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 (ADLS Gen2) with Hierarchical Namespace (HNS) enabled

Issue

Copy & Sync jobs abort when using Azure Data Lake Gen2 (with Hierarchical Namespace enabled). The aborts are accompanied by the following error in logs:
A required feature for this operation is not enabled on the account. RequestId: <...>
In some cases, jobs only succeed when using the Blob connection string and not using tags/metadata.

Cause

When using Azure Data Lake Gen2 with Hierarchical Namespace (HNS) enabled, Blob Index Tags (metadata/tags) are not supported. If Copy & Sync attempts to use tags/metadata—by reading, writing, or querying with tags—on a Data Lake Gen2 account, Azure will return the “Required feature not enabled” error.

Solution

To reliably use Copy & Sync with Azure Data Lake Gen2 (HNS enabled):
  • Create the relationship using the “Azure Data Lake” icon in the Copy & Sync UI.
  • Do not use tags/metadata in the sync relationship.
  • Ensure the Data Broker has all required Azure permissions as per Microsoft documentation.
  • If tags/metadata are required for your workflow, they are not supported on HNS-enabled accounts and cannot be used with ADLS Gen2 as a source in Cloud Sync.
