Applies to

  • OpenStack Cinder with NetApp ONTAP backend (iSCSI/NFS)
  • Red Hat OpenStack Platform 17.1.12 (Wallaby)
  • Cinder NetApp ONTAP drivers

Issue

When attempting to create a Cinder volume from an image stored in a NetApp Glance NFS store, the operation fails if the destination Cinder volume is provisioned on a different ONTAP FlexVol (i.e., cross-pool scenario). The failure is observed specifically during the NetApp native file-clone operation, with the following error in Cinder logs:

ONTAP error 13130: "Source and destination must be in the same volume."

Observed Behavior:

  • Volume creation from image works if both image and destination volume reside in the same FlexVol (same pool).
  • Cross-pool image-to-volume creation fails.
  • Creation of empty volumes (no image) succeeds.
  • Ceph/RBD-backed images do not exhibit this issue.

Example Test Matrix:

Test Image Pool Destination Pool Result
1 N1 N1 SUCCESS
2 N2 N2 SUCCESS
3 N1 N2 FAILURE
4 N2 N1 FAILURE
