Why do ONTAP storage node utilization graphs look different when comparing StorageNode and netapp_ontap objects?

  • When viewing storage node utilization graphs for ONTAP storage nodes, the graphed data can differ depending on whether StorageNode or netapp_ontap metrics object is being used.
  • Even though both netapp_ontap.system_node.utilization and StorageNode.performance.utilization use the same formula to generate utilization values, differences between these metrics can cause the graphs to diverge:
    • netapp_ontap metrics are collected during micro-polls, which occur every 5 minutes, whereas StorageNode metrics are captured during performance polls which are every 15 minutes by default
    • Query roll-up windows may not align perfectly when comparing graphs, introducing subtle differences in the resulting aggregated values
