vCenter login fails with Error 503

Issue

When trying to access vCenter, the following error message is displayed:

503 Service Unavailable (Failed to connect to endpoint: [N7Vmacore4Http20NamedPipeServiceSpecE:0x00007fb7d00200a0] _serverNamespace = / action = Allow _pipeName =/var/run/vmware/vpxd-webserver-pipe)

Starting the service via service-control shows:

Service-control failed. Error: Failed to start services in profile ALL. RC=1, stderr=Failed to start vapi-endpoint, vpxd-svcs services. Error: Operation timed out

/var/log/vmware/vpxd-svcs/vpxd-svcs.log shows an error similar to:

2021-06-10T11:28:06.931+02:00 [Thread-9  ERROR com.vmware.vim.sso.client.impl.SecurityTokenServiceImpl$RequestResponseProcessor  opId=] Server rejected the provided time range. Cause:ns0:InvalidTimeRange: The token authority rejected an issue request for TimePeriod [startTime=Thu Jun 10 11:28:06 CEST 2021, endTime=Fri Jun 11 11:28:06 CEST 2021] :: Signing certificate is not valid at Thu Jun 10 11:28:06 CEST 2021, cert validity: TimePeriod [startTime=Thu Jun 06 11:40:02 CEST 2019, endTime=Sat Jun 05 11:40:02 CEST 2021]
