Applies to

  • Logical Unit Number(LUN)
  • ONTAP 9

Answer

Used Size  is usually slightly larger than LUN Size  because:

  • LUN Size reports only the size of total L0 blocks that hold actual user data.
  • Used Size reports the size of total L0 blocks and indirect blocks that hold metadata/non-user data.

Example:

cluster::> lun show -instance

                  Vserver Name: svm1
                      LUN Path: /vol/vol1/lun1
                   Volume Name: vol1
                    Qtree Name: ""
                      LUN Name: lun1
                      LUN Size: 350GB
                       OS Type: linux
             Space Reservation: enabled
                 Serial Number: 801mG?QMdRIe
           Serial Number (Hex): 3830316d473f514d64524965
                       Comment:
    Space Reservations Honored: false
              Space Allocation: disabled
                         State: online
                      LUN UUID: 39597210-bb89-44bf-ac06-c926e55c4cd0
                        Mapped: unmapped
                     Used Size: 351.4GB
