How to tune memory settings of virtual appliance for VSC, VASA Provider, and SRA for scale and performance
Applies to
NetApp VASA Provider Software for VMware
Description
The virtual appliance for Virtual Storage Console (VSC), VASA Provider, and Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) runs in a VM (OVA) and uses Java for many of its processes. In large scale environments, performance may be improved by increasing Java memory settings. In certain cases, NetApp Support may recommend adjusting these settings for other customers as well. Insufficient memory for a specific process can impact user interface and other application task performance.
This article is targeted to the 7.2.1 and later releases which add more granularity for Java memory settings, and the performance optimizations in 7.2.1P2 and later releases (use the latest release available for large scale environments).
What is Large Scale?
NetApp Engineering suggests these thresholds as indicators of large scale environments that may benefit from these adjustments.
- Number of vSphere/ESXi hosts: 25 or more
- Number of datastores: 50 or more
- Number of LUNs (both traditional datastore LUNs as well as VVol Protocol Endpoint LUNs*): 100 or more
- Number of NFS mounts (FlexVol Volumes): 100 or more
* There will be one PE LUN for each FlexVol volume that is a VVol datastore.
