Description

This article describes the procedure to determine if partitions are aligned on both Windows and Linux, and describes two techniques that can be used to modify VM alignment in a VMware vSphere 5 environment. This article is applicable for Virtual Storage Console 4.2.1 for VMware® vSphere® and earlier versions. This does not apply to later versions as MBR Align support has been removed starting Virtual Storage Console 4.2.2 for VMware® vSphere®. For VSC 4.2.2 and later, VMware vCenter Converter is still a supported option of offline migrations.

It is recommended to align all Virtual Machine (VM) disk partitions to start a 4KB offset to provide optimal performance and deduplication savings. This alignment is needed when using both VMFS and NFS datastores.
