Answer

DAS ONTAP Select HA nodes cannot be vmotioned.

  • Takeover/Givebacks will need to be completed during the ESXi firmware upgrade.

ONTAP Deploy can be Vmotioned prior to the upgrade.

  • It's recommended it be done cold by powering down the Deploy node, vMotion, then power on. (This is non-disruptive to the HA cluster)

Additional Information

  • The upgraded ESX image must have the vendor RAID controller driver installed, so it will need to be downloaded from the ESX vendor. Do not use the vmware image.
  • NetApp Interoperability Matrix can be used to verify the ONTAP Select/Deploy versions are supported with the new ESX image version.
  • ONTAP Select on VMware
