Answer

To copy data inside a volume, ONTAP is using a mechanism that just updates the metadata of the blocks that are to be copied. The physical blocks are not moved.

  • This can not be achieved when the copy is between separate volumes
  • Copy between separate volumes is implemented by moving the physical blocks of data
