Answer

When an ONTAP node reboots or a volume comes online, it may be noticed that there is more I/O going to the cloud than normal. This can be following a normal takeover/giveback, aggregate relocation, or even creating new volumes can do this. Why is this?
  • ONTAP has a feature in FabricPool called "tiering scan" that will check if blocks need to be moved to the cloud or should stay on the local tier. When ONTAP is rebooted, or a volume comes online, it may not be unusual to see extra I/O coming from ONTAP, especially in a cluster with multiple nodes where they are all tiered to the cloud.
  • This behavior is normal and is expected with ONTAP 9.4 and newer releases.
