Why CRC errors on the storage controller may follow the placement of a lif?

Last Updated:

Applies to

  • Ontap
  • Cut-Through switches

  • CRC errors seen on ifstat may not be related to the effective communication between that port and the corresponding switch port, if the switch is cut-through
  • Cut-Through switches forward frames before they are completely received, to reduce the latency introduced by storing and forwarding frames
  • A frame containing CRC error will be forwarded to the outbound port by the switch, cause the switch will start forwarding the frames before complete reception
  • When CRC errors are propagated, moving a lif to a different port will have the side effect of redirecting these packets to the new port
  • This gives the impression that CRC errors "follow" the lif to the new port

Additional Information

  • Troubleshooting the origin of CRC errors will be dependent of the specific switch model and vendor being used
  • Please open a case with the switch vendor for further investigation
