The upgrade path cannot be determined after repurpose

Issue

  • When logging into console or node_mgmt lif, the ONTAP CLI displays the following error:

The upgrade path cannot be determined. The upgrade process has existed contact support personnel for the upgrade repair procedure.

  • This occurs after a re-purpose from 7-Mode to Clustered Data ONTAP or from downgrading to a lower version within ONTAP.
  • If prior upgrade was attempted but not completed and now upgrading to a lower version than installed on alternate image, attempts to upgrade will fail on image validation with error:

Error: Upgrade is not complete on nodes: cluster1-01.
Action: to complete the upgrade, run the advanced privilege command "system node upgrade-revert upgrade" on each node

  • When system node upgrade-revert upgrade is attempted, additional error results:

Error: command failed: Upgrade path cannot be determined. Upgrade exited.
