Applies to

  • ONTAP CIFS
  • Microsoft SQL server
  • Microsoft Windows Server

Issue

  • Without any changes, it is noted that a SQL service account is unable to access CIFS share with generic connectivity error, preventing backups
  • All other users can be connect to the same CIFS share normally using Windows File Explorer - the problem is isolated to a single account and just SQL services on a specific server
  • When logging into Windows server as the SQL service account, the same CIFS share connects using NETBIOS and IP address, but not the FQDN
  • Packet traces show that ONTAP is responding to SMB calls (DFS_GET_REFERRALS, TREE_DISCONNECT, and others) with STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
