Node can't boot with error 'Failed to restore /var from /dev/nvrd1'

Issue

  • After ONTAP upgrade and takeover/giveback, the node can't boot with the following var restore failed error and halted into LOADER automatically.

WARNING: Failed to restore /var from /dev/nvrd1. Removing logs...
ERROR: netapp_varfs: Failed to restore /var from /dev/nvrd1 after clean shutdown. Please contact technical support.

  • Upon setting setenv bootarg.init.console_muted false in LOADER prompt, more detailed info shows tar command error.

Creating varfs on /dev/nvrd1
/dev/nvrd1: 16.0MB (32768 sectors) block size 32768, fragment size 4096
using 4 cylinder groups of 4.03MB, 129 blks, 640 inodes.
super-block backups (for fsck_ffs -b #) at:
192, 8448, 16704, 24960
/dev/nvrd1: 1 files, 1 used, 3846 free (14 frags, 479 blocks, 0.4% fragmentation)
Restoring /var from /cfcard/x86_64/freebsd/varfs.tgz
