Applies to

  • ONTAP 9.5 or earlier upgrading to 9.6 through 9.7P5
  • NetApp Volume Encryption (NVE)
  • External key manager

Issue

  • When upgrading from ONTAP release 9.5 or earlier to ONTAP 9.6 through 9.7P5 while the cluster is in mixed mode, the key management servers might become unreachable in nodes upgraded to the newer version
  • The problem resolves itself when the cluster completely upgrades to the newer version
  • NVE volumes belonging to those nodes might go offline if these nodes need to be rebooted before the upgrade of the entire cluster is completed
    • (e.g. if the platform reboots an additional time after the first boot on an affected 9.6 or 9.7 image, such as for an NVRAM flash upgrade)
