Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • AFF-A220, AFF-A250
  • Storage Area Network (SAN)
  • Storage Location Cache (SLC)
  • Commvault backup

Issue

  • Event Management System (EMS) repeatedly issues LowMemory or even VeryLowMemory events:

Cluster::*> event log show -messages *mem*
Time                Node             Severity      Event
------------------- ---------------- ------------- ---------------------------
1/1/2023 08:16:11  Node-02           NOTICE        wafl.memory.statusLowMemory: WAFL is running low on memory, with 2151MB remaining.
1/1/2023 08:16:12  Node-02           ALERT         wafl.memory.statusVeryLowMemory: WAFL is running very low on memory, with 1159MB remaining.

  • Node disruption (Panic) may occur or data access may be impacted with older ONTAP versions, as example:

Panic String: Process mgwd unresponsive for 836 seconds in process nodewatchdog on release 9.5P7 (C)

  • These NOTICE or ALERT events show up frequently around LUN-clone tasks, specifically when Commvault is backing up LUNs using clone/backup/destroy tasks.
