Description

Windows Clients accessing a CIFS share hosted on NetApp storage.

A 1st Level folder contained within a CIFS share (ex, Accounting) is inadvertently renamed by an as of yet undetermined user or process. You want to use CIFS auditing to capture the username and IP address of the user that is renaming the folder.

Microsoft Windows ACL's (Access Control Lists) do 'Not' block the ability of a user to rename a folder. There is no single ACL that blocks a folder from being renamed. The reason for this is Windows uses both the Delete and Write Attributes to rename a folder. Unfortunately, these are the same attributes a user needs and thus cannot be blocked, thus leaving folders vulnerable to accidental renaming.
