Answer

  • The ifconfig -a command can be used to display the MAC address of interfaces in a VIF.
  • Each interface will have a single MAC address and the address will change on the filer's interfaces when a VIF is created.
  • You cannot determine the individual interface MAC while in it is in a VIF.
  • Applicable for both single and multi mode VIFs.

Example:

Before VIF creation:

filer> ifconfig -a

Creating a single mode VIF:

All three interfaces, two physical and the one logical VIF interface, share the same MAC address.

Additional Information

The switch can show what MAC addresses are connected, but since multiple interfaces share the same address, this cannot be used to determine the specific filer port to switch port mapping.

To find the port, trace the Ethernet cables. If tracing the cables isn't possible, disconnecting the cable from one of the switch ports on the switch will cause one of the filer interfaces to be marked down.
