  • ONTAP 9.2+
  • Cluster management network

Issue

  • Management interface is not reachable after ONTAP Upgrade from 9.1P16 to 9.3P21
  • Admin SVM has two interfaces mgmt and intercluster:
    • Mgmt LIF is configured with ip address 10.0.0.5/24 on port e0M
    • Intercluster LIF is configured with ip address  172.16.1.8/24 on port e0a
    • The client is on the same subnet as the intercluster LIF and has IP 172.16.1.5/24
    • The only static route configured for the SVM is a default route that points to 10.0.0.1/24
    • The client connects to the mgmt LIF (on e0M) that is remote to its subnet, sending a packet to 10.1.1.254
    • When ONTAP looks up the return route for this traffic, it will note that it has a directly connected route via the port e0a on the 172.16.1/24 subnet where the 172.16.1.5 (intercluster) LIF is configured
    • The return traffic will exit of the node's e0b port directly to the client
