Yes, it is backwards compatible. However, NetApp advices to upgrade the DSM software to a newer release before upgrading the SANtricity controller firmware:

From readme file:

IMPORTANT: If you're running Windows on your I/O-attached host, before upgrading SANtricity OS, you need to upgrade to the latest E-Series DSM,
which is available from the SANtricity OS download page under Additional Downloads.
