Applies to

  • ONTAP 9.1P8 and earlier
  • SVM DR
  • SnapMirror

Issue

  • Some SVM DR source volumes are full of vserverdr snapshots, which are not rolling off
  • The SVM-DR relationship continues to have successful updates and remain healthy unless the impacted source volume(s) hit the 255 snapshot limit

Failed to create snapshot copy on volume. Volume: volSource: Cannot exceed maximum number of Snapshot copies. Failed to create Snapshot copy on volume. Volume: volSource: Cannot exceed maximum number of Snapshot copies.

  • Impacted volumes will also not create or roll off snapshots managed via the volume's snapshot policy.

Note: Ensure your issue matches all three points before following this KB's solution steps. Individual volumes involved in SVM-DR may retain multiple vserverdr.* Snapshots if their underlying SnapMirror relationship is failing for other reasons. This is normal behavior. In these cases, use the snapmirror show -expand -fields last-transfer-error
