NDMP performance issue due to MTU mismatch

Issue

  • Most of the time, the backups are failing, which is causing the perceived performance issue
  • Errors in backup log:
dmp Tue Mar 17 13:23:52 EDT 2020 /BackupSVM/BackupVol(3) Log_msg (Write DIRNET for BKP ID=271, type=3 interrupted while at waiting for max inflight. Error = Broken pipe.)
dmp Tue Mar 17 13:23:52 EDT 2020 /BackupSVM/BackupVol(3) Error (Write to socket failed)

  • Packet trace analysis shows that the Media Agent was sending zero windows to the NetApp NDMP server
  • Pings using jumbo frame with -disallow-fragmentation set to true failed to reach the Media Agent, but can reach the gateway to the Media Agent

::> net ping -vserver <> -lif  <> -destination <> -disallow-fragmentation  true -packet-size 8972
