Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- Clustered Data ONTAP 8.3
- Data ONTAP 8.1 7-Mode
- Data ONTAP 8 7-Mode

Description
The Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) is a standardized protocol for controlling backup, recovery, and other types of data transfer between primary and secondary storage devices, such as storage systems and tape libraries. NDMP, and its use of dump and restore, can be used to copy data between different locations within, or between, storage systems. These storage systems can run different releases and/or operate in different modes of Data ONTAP. NetApp, and others, provide several utilities to facilitate copying of data using NDMP.
This article describes how to enable to use a few of these techniques to copy data using NDMP.
