Answer

DataFabric Manager (DFM) is the backing application and DB. This changed to Operations Manager(OM) with DFM 4.x and Oncommand Core Unified Manager(OCUM)

with 5.x

There are multiple interfaces.

  • CLI - Primarily used for troubleshooting.

  • Operations Manager(Legacy Webui)
    • Reports
    • Backup
    • Recovery

  • Oncommand Console(Webui)
    • New Reports
  • Netapp Management Console(NMC)(Java client)
    • Protection Manager(7-mode only) -
      • Used to manage backups/restores/local snapshots
    • Performance Advisor(7-mode only)
      • Used to monitor performance and set event thresholds
    • Provisioning Manager(7-mode only)
      • Used to for provisioning primary volumes.

OnCommand Unified Manager 6.x and newer(Active IQ Unified Manager as of 9.6) are independent from 5.x and earlier releases.

OnCommand System Manager(OCSM) is a fully independent application from all of the above. It is used to view then-current data and administer both Data ONTAP 7-Mode and Clustered Data ONTAP. It has no caching or alerting capabilities. For 7-mode systems there is a stand-alone client. For Clustered Data ONTAP systems, System Manager runs on-box for the cluster.
