Failed to set networking configuration on ActiveIQ UM 9.7 because the hostname contains a dot

Issue

An error appears after changing the network configuration following the maintenance console 

NOTE: Changes to the network settings have been made outside of the maintenance console. The pending changes made in the maintenance console have been discarded in order to avoid owerwriting the external changes.

An error appears in /var/log/syslog:

Jun <time> <hostname> network-config: Edit session: /tmp/<tempfile> - Command /usr/bin/hostnamectl set-hostname  failed (1).  Output:#012Invalid number of arguments.
